Amit Shah Declares Ahmedabad India’s Next Sports Capital

Amit Shah unveils Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah boldly declared Ahmedabad as India’s future “sports capital” during the inauguration of the state-of-the-art Veer Savarkar Sports Complex on Sunday, positioning the city as a global hub for athletic excellence. Speaking at the event, Shah highlighted the city’s world-class infrastructure, including the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, the upcoming Sardar Patel Sports Complex, and the newly launched Veer Savarkar facility, as pillars of a grand vision to host 13 international sporting events by 2036, including a potential bid for the 2036 Olympics.

“Ahmedabad is poised to lead not just Gujarat but the entire nation in sports,” Shah asserted, emphasizing the city’s strategic preparations to host major global events like the 2029 World Police & Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games, for which India has submitted a bid. He underscored the government’s ambition under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India the world’s top nation in every field by 2047, with sports as a cornerstone of national pride. “Sports is the soul of our country, and as the youngest nation globally, we must excel,” Shah said.

The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, sprawling across 1.19 lakh square meters, was hailed by Shah as India’s largest and most advanced sports facility. International sports federation leaders have praised it as a global benchmark, featuring an Olympic-class swimming pool, a Centre for Sports Excellence, a Sports Science Lab, a Nutrition Lab, an Indoor Multi-Sports Arena, and a Community Sports Centre. The complex also offers cutting-edge medical facilities, sports dietician guidance, and a theatre for analyzing global competitions in slow motion, ensuring athletes receive world-class training and support.

Shah credited Modi’s leadership for transforming India’s sports landscape over the past decade through transparent selection processes, enhanced training, and significant infrastructure investments. “From 2014 to now, the sports budget has surged from Rs 1,643 crore to Rs 5,300 crore,” he noted. This focus has yielded remarkable results: India’s Olympic medal tally rose to 15 in the last eight years, compared to 20 from 1948 to 2012, while Paralympic medals jumped from 8 to 52 and Deaflympics medals from 2 to 22 in the same period.

The minister also highlighted the new sports policy, which integrates sports with education and drives economic and social development. By naming the complex after freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, Shah said it would inspire athletes to win medals for India on the global stage. “This facility embodies our resolve to be number one,” he said, urging young athletes to draw motivation from Savarkar’s legacy of patriotism.

As Ahmedabad gears up to host major international events, the city is emerging as a beacon of India’s sporting ambitions. With world-class infrastructure and a clear roadmap, Shah’s vision signals a new era where Ahmedabad could redefine India’s place in global sports, fostering talent and pride for generations to come.
