Beware of Fake India Post 'Dak Seva Gifts' Messages Circulating on WhatsApp, Warns Government

Government warns fake India Post gift messages are designed to steal personal data.

The Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check unit has issued a warning against a viral social media message falsely claiming that India Post is offering gifts and rewards under a scheme called "Dak Seva Gifts." The government clarified that the message is fraudulent and has no connection with India Post or any official government initiative. The advisory comes amid the widespread circulation of the message on platforms such as WhatsApp and other social media networks.

According to PIB Fact Check, the deceptive message encourages users to click on external links and provide personal information in exchange for purported rewards. Authorities have categorically denied the existence of any such scheme and stressed that India Post is not conducting any lucky draw, prize distribution program, or reward campaign under the name being circulated online. The warning was shared through the official PIB Fact Check account on social media platform X.

Government officials have urged citizens to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited messages promising gifts, cash rewards, or other benefits. They advised the public not to click on suspicious links and to avoid sharing sensitive information such as bank account details, one-time passwords (OTPs), Aadhaar numbers, or other personal identification data. Such information can be exploited by cybercriminals for financial fraud and identity theft.

The latest alert follows a similar scam reported in 2022, when fraudsters circulated fake messages using India Post's name to lure users into sharing personal information. At the time, the government issued an official clarification stating that India Post does not announce subsidies, bonuses, prizes, or rewards based on surveys or online participation. Citizens were advised to ignore such communications and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.

Officials warned that these fraudulent campaigns are often designed to direct users to phishing websites or infect devices with malware. Cybersecurity experts note that scammers frequently impersonate trusted government institutions to create a false sense of legitimacy and increase the likelihood of victims responding to deceptive messages. Such tactics continue to pose a significant threat to digital safety and financial security.

The PIB Fact Check unit has appealed to the public not to forward the viral message and to verify any claims through official government channels before taking action. Authorities emphasized that India Post communicates its services, schemes, and announcements only through authorized platforms and never seeks personal or financial information through unsolicited messages. Citizens who encounter suspicious content related to the government have been encouraged to report it directly to the PIB Fact Check team for verification.
