Tamil Nadu Orders Private Schools to Display Fees on Notice Boards, Warns of Recognition Cancellation

The Tamil Nadu government has directed all recognized private schools across the state to prominently display their approved tuition fee structures on school notice boards, aiming to improve transparency and prevent unauthorized fee collection. The move comes ahead of the reopening of schools on June 4 and follows complaints from parents alleging that some institutions were charging fees beyond the limits prescribed by the government.

According to officials from the School Education Department, the new directive is intended to ensure that parents have clear access to information regarding the fees legally permitted for each institution. Authorities said the measure would help curb instances of excessive fee collection and provide parents with a straightforward way to verify whether schools are complying with government regulations.

The department has also issued a strong warning to private schools against collecting hidden admission charges or any additional fees that exceed approved limits. Officials stated that institutions found violating the prescribed fee structure could face serious consequences, including the cancellation of their official recognition. The government has emphasized that strict monitoring will be carried out to ensure compliance.

Tamil Nadu currently has more than 13,000 recognized private schools. Education officials noted that the regulation is backed by the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Amendment Act, which governs how fees are determined and collected. Under the provisions of the law, a committee consisting of senior government officials and education experts is responsible for fixing standard fee structures for private educational institutions.

The state government believes that making fee information publicly available will enhance accountability and reduce disputes between parents and school managements. By requiring schools to display approved fees in visible locations, authorities hope to discourage unauthorized collections and strengthen public confidence in the education system. The initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure fairness and transparency in school administration.

Officials have also encouraged parents to report any instances of excessive or unauthorized fee collection to the appropriate authorities. Complaints received from parents will be examined, and action will be taken against schools found to be violating regulations. The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of students and families while ensuring that private educational institutions adhere to established legal and administrative guidelines.
