Bengaluru Jail Under Fire As Videos Show Convicted Rapist Using Phones, Watching TV Behind Bars
Viral videos reveal convicted rapist Umesh Reddy using phones and TV in Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Jail.
Widespread outrage has erupted after disturbing videos emerged from Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail showing notorious inmates enjoying unauthorized privileges behind bars. Among them is serial rapist and killer Umesh Reddy, seen casually using mobile phones and watching television inside his cell, in what appears to be a serious security and corruption lapse within the prison administration.
The viral videos show Reddy, who was convicted of raping 20 women and murdering 18 of them between 1996 and 2022, handling two Android phones and one keypad mobile inside the jail, reportedly under the knowledge of staff. A television set is also visible in his barracks, raising questions about the lax enforcement of prison rules. Reddy’s death sentence was commuted by the Supreme Court in 2022 to 30 years of imprisonment without remission after he was declared mentally sound following medical evaluation.
Adding to the controversy, images of another inmate, Tarun Raju, have surfaced online. Arrested in connection with the Ranya Rao gold smuggling case, Raju is seen using a phone and even cooking inside the prison. He was nabbed while attempting to escape to Geneva and is accused of orchestrating a gold smuggling network that supplied gold from Dubai to Ranya Rao, daughter of a senior IPS officer.

The revelations have triggered calls for strict action against jail staff and officials allegedly complicit in granting special privileges to high-profile convicts. Critics argue that such incidents highlight systemic failures within the Karnataka prison system, undermining public trust in law enforcement.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that a detailed investigation will be launched into the incidents. He assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the misuse of electronic devices and other unauthorized facilities inside the prison.
