Bengaluru Airport Staffer Arrested for Harassing South Korean Passenger

Airport security fails as foreign tourist alleges inappropriate touching and forced hug during fake check.

In a shocking breach of passenger safety, a ground staff member at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) was arrested on January 21 after a 32-year-old South Korean businesswoman accused him of sexual harassment. The incident occurred in the international departure area of Terminal 2 as the woman prepared to board her flight home to South Korea. The accused, identified as Mohammed Affann Ahmed (also reported as Affaann Ahmed), allegedly approached her after immigration and CISF checks, claiming an issue with her baggage beeping or ticket, and insisted on a separate “manual frisking.”

According to the victim’s complaint, the staffer took her to a secluded area—reported in some accounts as near a men’s restroom—where he inappropriately touched her and forcibly hugged her despite her clear resistance. He then casually said “okay, thank you” and walked away. Disturbed and alarmed, the woman immediately reported the matter to airport security personnel, who swiftly detained the accused and handed him over to the KIA Airport Police.

CCTV footage reviewed by authorities confirmed the sequence of events, including the unauthorized interaction and the harassment. The woman, who had been in India on a tourist visa since November visiting friends, recounted how she “freaked out” during the assault. Police registered a case under relevant sections for sexual harassment, arrested Ahmed—a contractual ground staff with Air India SATS—and remanded him to judicial custody. Investigations continue to ascertain if there are any prior complaints or lapses in protocol.

The episode has raised serious concerns about passenger screening procedures, staff authorization, and safety measures at one of India’s busiest airports. It underscores the need for stricter oversight on ground-handling personnel and enhanced training to prevent misuse of authority. Authorities have assured thorough probing, with calls growing for better safeguards for solo female travelers.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring secure and respectful airport experiences amid rising international traffic at KIA.
