Assam Police Bust Illegal Border Entry Network, Detain Four Bangladeshi Nationals in Guwahati

Assam Police detained four Bangladeshi nationals and arrested a broker facilitating illegal border crossings.

In a major crackdown, the Assam Police apprehended four Bangladeshi nationals, including a minor, from the Dispur area, exposing an alleged illegal entry network operating across the India–Bangladesh border. The arrests were made following specific intelligence inputs, highlighting ongoing concerns over cross-border infiltration and organised human movement networks in the region.

According to officials, the individuals had reportedly entered India without valid documentation and were detained by the Border Branch of the Police Commissionerate. They are currently being held at Dispur Police Station, where legal procedures are underway, including steps related to their deportation back to Bangladesh. Authorities stated that the detainees are being questioned to gather more information about their journey and contacts.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the group had crossed the international border on April 10 after being lured by brokers with promises of employment opportunities. They reportedly reached Guwahati the following day, indicating a well-coordinated movement facilitated by intermediaries. Police believe such operations are part of a broader network that exploits vulnerable individuals seeking livelihood options.

In a significant development, police also arrested an alleged broker identified as Md Akkash Ali, a taxi driver by profession, who is accused of facilitating the movement of the group after their entry into India. A case has been registered against him under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Immigration & Foreigners Act, 2025.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing to identify other members of the network and determine the scale of illegal infiltration activities in the region. The crackdown is part of intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb cross-border crimes, including human trafficking and unauthorised entry, which remain key security concerns in northeastern India.
