Assam Man Arrested For Raping And Impregnating His Minor Daughter
41-year-old arrested in Cachar nearly a year after daughter’s abuse complaint.
A man from Assam’s Cachar district has been arrested after evading police for nearly 11 months on charges of repeatedly raping his minor daughter and impregnating her three years ago. Officials confirmed that the 41-year-old accused was taken into custody on Monday night following an extensive manhunt. The survivor, now 16, had lodged a formal complaint in January this year, leading to the registration of a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to the complaint, the incident first occurred in 2022 but remained hidden for over a year because the accused had allegedly threatened to kill the girl and her younger brother if she revealed the abuse. The survivor told police that she was sexually assaulted several times, resulting in a pregnancy when she was just 13 years old. Her health deteriorated during the seventh month of pregnancy, prompting her to confide in a maternal aunt who later confronted the accused.
Instead of taking responsibility, the father reportedly instructed the relatives to take the girl for medical help and then sent her away to a relative's home in Silchar. A few weeks later, she gave birth to a baby girl, who was temporarily cared for by family members. During this time, the accused married another woman, and the stepmother allegedly refused to let the victim return home.

The distraught teenager later attempted to end her life but changed her mind for the sake of her newborn. She then fled to Guwahati, where she fell ill and was rescued by Railway Police personnel. Authorities placed her in a government-registered shelter home in Silchar while recording her statement and arranging child support. Assisted by the Child Helpline, the girl filed a complaint on January 18, 2025, detailing the years of sexual abuse and threats she endured.
Police tracked the absconding accused for months before finally apprehending him earlier this week. He was produced before a local court on Tuesday and has been remanded to judicial custody. Officials confirmed that DNA testing and additional evidence have been submitted to strengthen the prosecution’s case. The incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and improved rehabilitation support for survivors of sexual violence in rural Assam.
