UPI Services Launched In Greece For Indian Users And Tourists
UPI expands global footprint with Greece launch.
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially gone live in Greece, marking another milestone in the global expansion of the country's digital payments ecosystem. The rollout enables eligible Indian users to make instant, secure, and seamless digital payments while in Greece using compatible UPI-enabled mobile applications. The development further strengthens UPI's growing international presence and supports easier transactions for Indian tourists, students, and business travellers.
Announcing the development, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the introduction of UPI in Greece would allow customers to transfer money quickly and securely while significantly reducing transaction costs compared to conventional international payment methods. He added that the increasing acceptance of UPI across global markets reflects India's progress in developing technology-driven financial solutions with international relevance.
With Greece joining the network, UPI is now available in 10 countries through various arrangements, including QR code-based merchant payments and cross-border remittance services. Earlier in June, the digital payment platform was launched in Nice, France, further expanding its footprint in Europe. The continued international rollout is part of the National Payments Corporation of India's efforts to make India's digital payment infrastructure accessible to users abroad.

UPI has gained popularity internationally due to its simple and efficient payment process, allowing users to complete transactions by scanning QR codes or transferring funds directly using mobile-linked accounts. The platform enables secure payments between individuals and merchants without requiring customers to repeatedly share bank account details, making transactions both faster and more convenient.
The expansion into Greece represents another step in India's broader push to internationalise its digital public infrastructure. As more countries adopt or integrate UPI-based payment systems, Indian travellers and businesses are expected to benefit from lower transaction costs, improved payment convenience, and greater financial connectivity, further enhancing economic and tourism ties between India and partner nations.
