Tripura Bypoll 2026: Voting Begins in Dharmanagar as BJP, Congress and Left Battle for Seat

Voting is underway in Dharmanagar across 55 booths with tight security arrangements in place.

Voting commenced at 7 am on Thursday for the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency bypoll in North Tripura district, amid tight security and extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process. A total of 46,142 registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in the by-election, with women (23,758) slightly outnumbering men (22,348). The by-election has attracted six candidates from various parties, including the three major contenders — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Left Front, and the Congress — all contesting separately.

Returning officer Debjani Choudhury highlighted that polling is being conducted across all 55 booths using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). Additionally, webcasting has been implemented in all booths to ensure complete transparency and maintain public confidence in the process. Adequate protective sheds have been installed at polling stations to safeguard voters against heavy rains or cyclonic conditions expected in the region between April 8 and 10. Choudhury added that security personnel are stationed across the constituency to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain order during the voting process.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of Assembly speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen of the BJP in December 2024. The election has drawn attention from political parties and local media alike, as the outcome could provide indications of voter sentiment and influence regional political dynamics ahead of the next Assembly elections in Tripura. Local party offices have reported active campaigning in recent weeks, with candidates engaging with voters to secure support in what is expected to be a competitive contest.

Political analysts note that while the bypoll involves a relatively small electorate, the Dharmanagar seat carries symbolic significance. The BJP, which previously held the constituency, aims to retain it to consolidate its position in the region, while the Congress and Left Front view the election as an opportunity to make inroads and strengthen their influence. Campaigning has also focused on local development issues, welfare schemes, and governance performance, with candidates emphasising their commitment to addressing the concerns of constituents.

Voter turnout is being closely monitored, with officials noting that the presence of women voters in slightly higher numbers than men could influence the outcome. Observers have praised the comprehensive arrangements by the Election Commission, including the use of webcasting and VVPAT-enabled EVMs, as steps toward ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election. The counting of votes and announcement of results are expected in the coming weeks, with all political stakeholders waiting to gauge the electorate’s preference in this crucial by-election.
