Foreign Secretary Misri Launches India-US Trade Facilitation Portal During Three-Day Washington Visit
Misri launches portal as India and US target five hundred billion dollars bilateral trade.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri launched the India-US Trade Facilitation Portal on Wednesday, marking a key step in strengthening bilateral trade ties between the two countries. The virtual launch event was attended by India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra, along with trade officials and business representatives from both nations. Misri described the portal as a bridge to reinforce existing supply chains while enabling new commercial linkages to emerge. The platform is aimed at facilitating seamless trade, providing businesses—from farmers to software firms—direct access to opportunities across the US market. This initiative comes as India and the US work to achieve a bilateral trade target of $500 billion by 2030.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted that the portal serves as a "runway" for Indian exporters seeking entry into the US market. He emphasized that it will benefit a wide spectrum of industries, including agriculture, jewellery, pharmaceuticals, and technology. The minister encouraged both Indian and US businesses to actively leverage the portal to boost trade and build stronger commercial partnerships. The portal is also expected to streamline business-to-business (B2B) interactions and foster trust by reducing friction in cross-border transactions. Analysts see this move as a significant effort to strengthen India-US economic cooperation.
Misri’s three-day visit to the US aims to review bilateral trade and defence relations while discussing global developments, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Relations between the two nations experienced tension after the US imposed punitive tariffs on India and President Donald Trump made controversial statements about de-escalating India-Pakistan military clashes last May. The launch of the portal and ongoing diplomatic engagement signal a positive shift, reflecting both countries’ commitment to stabilising economic and strategic ties. The portal is expected to serve as a key mechanism to support the Interim Agreement framework agreed upon in February.

The portal’s development involved extensive coordination by India’s Consulate General in New York along with stakeholders, export promotion councils, industrial bodies, and government departments from both countries. Misri highlighted that while several B2B platforms already exist, a dedicated India-US platform unlocks the full potential of bilateral trade. In the last year alone, bilateral trade reached a record $241 billion, making the US India’s largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year. Officials believe the platform will accelerate progress toward the ambitious Mission 500 target.
Overall, the India-US Trade Facilitation Portal reflects a broader evolution in governmental roles, with authorities actively matchmaking between buyers and sellers rather than serving as mere facilitators. Misri noted that the portal aims to reduce obstacles in trade, foster trust, and create new opportunities for commercial collaboration. By providing a dedicated and streamlined interface for businesses on both sides, the initiative is expected to enhance efficiency and strengthen economic ties. The portal marks a strategic effort to support India’s global trade ambitions while reinforcing the bilateral partnership with the United States.
