Security Arrangements Heightened Across India for Eid-ul-Fitr, Multiple States on Alert

Security beefed up nationwide for Eid-ul-Fitr; police patrolling, flag marches, and drones deployed for safety.

Security across India has been significantly heightened as worshippers prepare for Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of Ramzan. Authorities in multiple states have implemented extensive measures to ensure the safety of residents during prayers and celebrations, particularly given overlapping festivals and regional sensitivities.

Clerics announced that Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on Saturday after the crescent moon was not sighted on Thursday evening, although Kerala celebrated the festival a day earlier, on Friday. Law enforcement agencies in several regions have coordinated proactive security measures to maintain order during the festivities.

In Uttarakhand, Hardoi’s Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Meena, stated that the district has been divided into sectors and zones, with police personnel stationed at all mosques and flag marches conducted as part of the security plan. He emphasized vigilance against any anti-social elements during the festival and ongoing Chaitra Navratri.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district deployed both uniformed and plainclothes officers, along with Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel and drones for surveillance, according to SP Sri Elamaran G.

Bihar’s sensitive Bhagalpur district was also placed on high alert in light of Eid, Chaiti Chhath, and Ram Navami festivals. Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Kumar Yadav conducted mock drills, while District Magistrate Nawal Kishore Choudhary stated that the administration is actively monitoring the situation. Security was further tightened in Hyderabad’s Old City around Mecca Masjid and Charminar ahead of Jumu'atul-Wida, the last Friday prayers before Eid.

Across southern India, large congregations gathered for prayers in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, Tamil Nadu’s Madurai and Coimbatore, and Kerala, where political party nominees visited mosques ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections. Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader Fareed emphasized the message of peace, unity, and harmony that religious festivals bring to society.
