India And Cambodia Explore Deepening Bilateral Ties In Trade, Defence, And Development
India and Cambodia hold talks to expand trade, defence, and development partnerships.
India and Cambodia discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, heritage conservation, and development partnerships during a meeting in New Delhi on Friday. P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), held talks with a Cambodian delegation led by KHY Sovanratana, Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, officials said.
The discussions highlighted India’s capacity-building initiatives for Cambodia, including training of Cambodian diplomats at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service. Both sides explored ways to deepen cooperation in trade and investments, support heritage conservation projects, and strengthen development partnerships, according to a statement posted by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
Last month, India and Cambodia reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during high-level military engagements in Phnom Penh. As part of the Army-to-Army Staff Talks, Major General Akaash Johar, Additional Director General, International Cooperation, met with Lt General Mao Sophan, Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army. The discussions focused on increasing joint military exercises, expanding training cooperation, and strengthening coordination in the defence sector.

Particular emphasis was placed on military capacity building, professional military education, and exchange of operational experience. Cambodia expressed interest in sending more personnel to India for specialised training, recognising the professional expertise and training standards of the Indian armed forces. Officials underlined the goal of translating defence partnerships into practical, ground-level cooperation beyond formal dialogues.
The two countries reiterated their long-term commitment to strategic defence ties, aimed at promoting regional peace, stability, and security. Analysts note that such engagements align with India’s ‘Act East’ policy and ASEAN partnerships, with Cambodia serving as an important interlocutor and regional ally.
Beyond defence, India-Cambodia cooperation has grown in multiple sectors, including institutional capacity building, human resource development, financial assistance for infrastructure projects, social security initiatives, and broader defence capacity-building efforts. Both nations emphasized strengthening these partnerships to foster economic growth, regional stability, and sustainable development.
