OpenAI To Launch ChatGPT Ads Across 31 European Markets Starting Monday, August 24

ChatGPT Ads Expand Across Europe From Monday.

OpenAI will begin displaying advertisements to ChatGPT users across Europe from August 24, expanding its advertising business beyond the United States. The move will make ads available to users of the free version of ChatGPT as well as subscribers to the company's lower-cost Go plan in 31 European countries, marking another step in OpenAI's efforts to generate more revenue from its artificial intelligence services. The company said late Tuesday that European users would start seeing advertisements from Monday. OpenAI had previously introduced advertising in the United States in February, giving marketers a new way to reach people using its AI tools.

The European expansion will significantly broaden the potential audience for the advertising programme and comes as ChatGPT continues to serve millions of users for tasks ranging from information searches and writing to research and decision-making. OpenAI said the expansion would provide marketers across Europe with an opportunity to reach people while they are actively exploring options, comparing information and making decisions.

The company described the advertising initiative as a way for businesses to connect with users during interactions with its AI products. The rollout will apply to users of ChatGPT's free service and its Go subscription tier, while higher-priced subscription plans were not identified as part of the advertising expansion in the announcement. The move comes as OpenAI faces substantial costs associated with developing and operating increasingly powerful AI models.

Running large-scale AI systems requires significant computing infrastructure, including expensive data centres, advanced chips and substantial energy resources. Advertising could provide the company with an additional source of income alongside its existing subscription and enterprise businesses as it seeks to finance continued development of its technology.

OpenAI is also preparing for a potential initial public offering that could give the company a valuation approaching $1 trillion, according to reports. At the same time, the company is competing aggressively with rivals in the rapidly expanding AI market. US-based Anthropic has emerged as a major competitor, while Chinese AI companies have developed models that can offer strong performance at comparatively lower costs.

The intensifying competition has increased pressure on leading AI companies to expand both their products and their sources of revenue.  The European advertising rollout also represents a significant change for users who have relied on ChatGPT without seeing conventional advertising. The free version has played an important role in making the service accessible to a broad audience, while the Go plan offers a lower-cost paid option. Go subscribers in Europe pay eight euros, or about $9.30, per month, according to the company. OpenAI's expansion into advertising reflects a broader shift in the business models surrounding generative artificial intelligence.

While subscriptions and corporate contracts remain important sources of revenue, advertising offers technology companies another way to monetise large user bases. The challenge for OpenAI will be balancing commercial opportunities with the user experience and trust associated with an AI assistant. The European launch will therefore be closely watched by advertisers and ChatGPT users alike.

With the programme expanding to 31 countries, OpenAI will gain access to a much larger advertising market while testing how users respond to commercial content within an AI-powered service. The August 24 rollout marks the latest stage in the company's effort to turn ChatGPT's enormous user base into a more sustainable source of revenue as competition and operating costs continue to rise.
