Humayun Kabir Summoned By Police Over Alleged Controversial Remarks

Police summon Humayun Kabir over alleged controversial remarks.

Murshidabad police have summoned Naoda MLA and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir for questioning in connection with two separate cases filed over his alleged controversial remarks. The development comes within 24 hours of political warnings issued in the West Bengal Assembly, further escalating tensions around the issue.

According to officials, police teams visited Kabir’s residence on Tuesday and issued formal notices directing him to appear before Rejinagar Police Station on July 3 and Shaktipur Police Station on July 5. The summons relate to FIRs registered in both jurisdictions over speeches delivered by the MLA that are alleged to have contained provocative statements.

Kabir, however, claimed he was not present at home when the notice was delivered and said he would decide on his appearance after receiving the document personally. Speaking to media, he maintained that he had not yet seen the official notice and suggested that he would consider his response once he reviews it in full.

The case has intensified political exchanges in the state after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned of strict action during a recent Assembly session. Following the warning, police also detained three organisers associated with Kabir’s public meetings in Murshidabad, including local party functionaries linked to AJUP. Officials said the arrests were made in connection with alleged unlawful activities and provocative mobilisation during the events.

The controversy stems from recent public meetings held by Kabir in Rejinagar and Shaktipur, where his remarks were allegedly interpreted as inflammatory, prompting the registration of two FIRs. The issue has also triggered heated exchanges in the state Assembly, with ruling party leaders accusing Kabir of destabilising the region’s peace.

Kabir, meanwhile, has defended his statements, saying he had not spoken against the Chief Minister but had criticised individuals who recently switched political affiliations. He added that he remains ready to face legal proceedings if required, stating that he has nothing to hide and will respond according to law once formally summoned.
