Former Microsoft Director Shares Lessons After 2023 Layoff Experience

Former Microsoft director Raheel Khawaja has urged professionals to prepare for career uncertainty after the technology giant announced a fresh round of job cuts, saying that "no one is exempt" from layoffs in today's corporate environment. Drawing from his own experience of being laid off by Microsoft in 2023, Khawaja said job losses can become an opportunity to pursue entrepreneurship, build financial independence, and create long-term career flexibility. His comments came as Microsoft confirmed it would eliminate around 4,800 jobs, representing approximately 2.1% of its global workforce, as part of a broader restructuring exercise.
Khawaja, who now lives in Texas, shared his views on LinkedIn, where he expressed support for employees affected by the latest layoffs. He said he understood their situation because he had experienced a similar setback three years ago. In his message, he encouraged impacted workers to remain optimistic, writing that while losing a job is difficult, it can also mark the beginning of a new chapter that may ultimately lead to better opportunities. He said those facing uncertainty would eventually find a way forward despite the immediate challenges.
Before leaving Microsoft in 2023, Khawaja served for nearly two years as Director and Operations Lead for Commercial Software Engineering and Industry Solutions. Following his departure, he transitioned into entrepreneurship by establishing businesses in the insurance and commercial real estate sectors. According to him, side projects that he had begun developing while still employed became the foundation for his new ventures, allowing him to reduce dependence on a single corporate employer.

Reflecting on Microsoft's latest restructuring, Khawaja said the layoffs reinforce an important reality for professionals across industries—that no company is too large to reduce its workforce and no employee is guaranteed long-term job security. He advised workers to treat such developments as a wake-up call by building additional income streams, investing in marketable skills, strengthening personal brands, and pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities alongside their primary careers.
Microsoft recently announced that approximately 4,800 positions would be eliminated as part of an organisational restructuring. The reductions are largely concentrated in the Xbox gaming division, although some commercial business units are also affected. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman told employees that the restructuring was driven by changing business priorities and clarified that the eliminated roles were not being replaced by artificial intelligence.
According to Khawaja's LinkedIn profile, he has more than 15 years of corporate experience across Australia and the United States, having previously held positions at PwC before joining Microsoft. He said he had started preparing for an entrepreneurial transition as early as 2019 while still working in corporate America, a strategy that helped ease his move into business ownership after his layoff. His experience has since become a reference point for advising professionals navigating career disruptions in an increasingly uncertain employment landscape.
