Delhi Govt Limits Official Vehicles, Promotes Carpooling After PM Modi's Energy Appeal

Delhi limits official vehicles and promotes carpooling per the PM's directive.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced a series of fuel conservation measures, including restrictions on the use of official vehicles and the promotion of carpooling and public transport across government departments. The move comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens and state governments to adopt austerity measures and conserve energy amid global fuel uncertainty linked to the West Asia crisis.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Gupta said the Delhi government had decided to reduce the number of vehicles used for departmental operations and official duties. She added that ministers, BJP MLAs, government officials, and public representatives would be encouraged to use only the minimum number of vehicles necessary for official work. The chief minister also stressed that carpooling and public transportation should be prioritised as part of the broader effort to reduce fuel consumption and support national energy-saving goals.

Gupta said the initiative aligns with the prime minister's vision of transforming energy conservation into a “people’s movement” during a period of global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. The Centre has been encouraging states and citizens to reduce unnecessary fuel usage as instability in West Asia continues to affect global oil markets and fuel supply chains. Rising crude oil prices and concerns over long-term energy security have prompted several governments and institutions to adopt precautionary conservation measures.

The Delhi government’s announcement follows similar steps taken by other states, including Uttar Pradesh, where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently ordered a reduction in ministerial convoys and promoted work-from-home arrangements. Analysts believe such measures are intended not only to reduce immediate fuel consumption but also to send a symbolic message encouraging responsible energy use among citizens during a period of international uncertainty.
