Air India To Strengthen Global Network With 50-60 New Aircraft Deliveries Planned
Air India plans major fleet expansion with new aircraft.
The Air India Group is expected to receive 50-60 new aircraft over the next 18 months as part of its ongoing fleet expansion and transformation programme, a senior company executive said. The airline group is continuing efforts to strengthen operations and improve passenger experience following its acquisition by Tata Group. Air India Chief Commercial Officer and Air India Express Chairman Nipun Aggarwal said the airline’s transformation programme remains on track despite challenges faced by the aviation industry due to several unexpected disruptions.
Aggarwal said the airline’s journey over the past few years has involved significant learning and operational changes. He described the transformation process as complex and challenging, requiring improvements across multiple areas of the business. Air India was acquired by Tata Group in January 2022 after years under government ownership. Since then, the airline has been implementing a wide-ranging strategy focused on fleet modernisation, network expansion, service improvements and operational upgrades.
The expected addition of new aircraft is part of the airline’s broader plan to strengthen its position in domestic and international aviation markets. A larger fleet will allow the group to increase capacity, expand routes and improve connectivity. Along with fleet growth, Air India is also focusing on enhancing customer experience across different stages of travel. The airline is working on introducing new service standards for cabin crew and airport staff to improve passenger interactions.

The company has been investing in operational improvements as it seeks to compete with leading global carriers. These efforts include upgrades in technology, services and overall travel experience. The aviation sector has faced several challenges in recent years, including supply chain disruptions, aircraft delivery delays, fuel price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties. Despite these pressures, Air India has continued with its expansion plans. The airline group’s growth strategy also includes strengthening Air India Express, its low-cost carrier subsidiary.
The expansion of the combined fleet is expected to support increased passenger capacity and help the group serve more destinations. Aggarwal said the company has gained valuable experience from managing the transformation process and continues to focus on long-term growth. He highlighted that improving reliability and customer satisfaction remains a key priority. With new aircraft deliveries expected in the coming months, Air India is aiming to accelerate its transformation and establish itself as a stronger player in global aviation. The success of the plan will depend on effective execution, operational efficiency and maintaining service quality as the airline expands.
