Mumbai Men Allegedly Murder Friend After Fish Disappears From Pan
Two men allegedly kill friend in Mumbai over missing fish.
A 35‑year‑old man was brutally killed by two acquaintances in Mumbai’s Goregaon area after the trio’s cooked fish mysteriously vanished from a pan — later attributed to rats — police said Friday. The bizarre incident unfolded late on February 24, with authorities now treating the case as a premeditated murder driven by a misunderstanding that escalated into deadly violence.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Afsar, was at a flat in Goregaon with two friends, Suresh and Rajesh Rameshnath, both of whom worked with him as scrap dealers. The three had prepared and cooked fish together at the residence and later consumed alcohol before falling asleep. When Suresh and Rajesh woke up to eat, they were shocked to find the pan — which earlier contained cooked fish — completely empty.
Believing that Afsar had eaten all the fish while they slept, the two men confronted him, sparking a heated argument that quickly turned violent. In a fit of rage, Suresh and Rajesh allegedly assaulted Afsar with kicks and punches. The confrontation culminated when they reportedly struck him on the head with a stone, crushing his skull and killing him at the scene, police said.
Unbeknownst to the assailants at the time, rats had actually consumed the cooked fish during the night while the three were asleep, leaving the pan empty and sparking the fatal misunderstanding. After the killing, both suspects fled the scene and headed toward Haryana, officials added.
A murder case was registered at the Vanrai police station, and a manhunt was launched. Investigators faced challenges tracking the suspects because neither had mobile phones or identification documents, but after questioning about 50 locals and garbage collectors in the area, police located Suresh in Haryana and Rajesh at a railway station and arrested them.
During the course of the investigation, authorities learned that Rajesh had a prior criminal record, including alleged involvement in other serious offenses such as extortion and an earlier murder. The victim’s body has been sent for post‑mortem examination as police continue their inquiries into the case.
