Spiritual Leader Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation have outlined five preparatory steps aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of yoga practice, mindfulness, and meditation. The guidance was shared through a recent Instagram post, where the foundation emphasized yoga as more than a physical exercise, describing it as a “profound process of aligning your system with the larger geometry of existence.”
Yoga has gained widespread global acceptance as a practice that supports physical flexibility, strength, and mental well-being. Health experts also note that consistent yoga practice, when done safely, may help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Against this backdrop, the Isha Foundation’s recommendations focus on simple pre-practice habits that are intended to help practitioners prepare both body and mind before beginning their sessions.
The first recommendation suggests practising yoga on an empty stomach, ideally leaving a gap of two to three hours after meals. According to the foundation, this allows the body to move more freely without diverting energy toward digestion, making poses such as forward bends, twists, and inversions more comfortable and less restrictive.

The second and third steps emphasize physical readiness and comfort. A cool shower before practice is suggested to improve alertness and help the body feel refreshed, while loose, breathable clothing is recommended to ensure unrestricted movement during yoga. The foundation notes that tight clothing may become uncomfortable as the body begins to expand energy during practice.
The remaining steps focus on traditional yogic elements. The Isha Foundation suggests the use of neem and turmeric, often associated with cleansing practices in Indian wellness traditions, and beginning yoga with an invocation rooted in sound-based practices such as Nada Yoga. These steps, according to Sadhguru, are intended to help practitioners cultivate focus, balance, and energetic awareness before starting their routines.
While these practices are presented within a spiritual framework, experts generally advise individuals to approach yoga in a way that suits their physical condition and comfort level. They also recommend consulting qualified instructors or healthcare professionals when needed, ensuring that yoga practice remains safe, sustainable, and beneficial for overall well-being.
