Why School Buses Are Painted Yellow: The Safety Science Explained

The safety reason behind the iconic yellow school bus.

The bright yellow colour of school buses is not simply a design choice. It was selected for practical reasons linked to visibility and safety, eventually becoming one of the most recognisable features of school transportation, particularly in the United States and parts of Canada.

The story dates back nearly a century, when education officials and transportation experts began looking for a standard colour for school buses. Before that, school buses could appear in a variety of colours, making them less visually consistent. A push towards standardisation helped establish a distinctive colour that could be easily recognised on roads.

Yellow was considered particularly effective because it stands out clearly against many surroundings and can be noticed from a distance. Its visibility is especially useful during the early morning hours when many students travel to school, as well as in changing weather and lighting conditions.

Another reason yellow became associated with school buses is the way people perceive colour. The yellow used on school buses is highly noticeable, while the contrast between the bus’s colour and its black lettering makes important markings easier to identify. This helps other road users recognise that the vehicle is a school bus.

The familiar colour also became closely linked with safety regulations and standards in North America. In the United States, a specific shade commonly known as “school bus yellow” became part of the standardised appearance of school buses. This consistency means drivers can quickly identify school transportation and understand that children may be boarding or leaving the vehicle.

Today, the yellow school bus has become more than just a transport vehicle colour. It is a symbol of school life across much of North America, with its distinctive appearance reflecting decades of efforts to make student transportation more visible, recognisable and safer on the road.
