Travelling Via Lonavala-Karjat? Check These Train Cancellations First

Central Railway cancels trains through July 17 after Bhor Ghat landslide.

Central Railway has cancelled several long-distance, intercity and special train services until July 17 after heavy monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides in the Lonavala–Karjat ghat section, severely disrupting rail traffic along one of Maharashtra’s busiest railway corridors. Several other trains have also been diverted, short-terminated or short-originated as restoration work continues on the damaged tracks.

The landslides occurred on July 6 in the Bhor Ghat section between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill and affected all three railway lines in the area. Although the Middle line was declared safe for operations on July 7, extensive damage to the remaining tracks has required round-the-clock repair work. Railway officials said the operational changes were introduced to protect passengers and allow restoration teams to work safely.

According to Central Railway, 15 trains, including three Pune–Mumbai intercity services, will remain cancelled until July 17. The suspended daily services include the Deccan Queen, Deccan Express, Intercity Express, Hubballi–Dadar Express, Indore–Daund Express, CSMT–Hyderabad Express and CSMT–Chennai Egmore Superfast Mail, affecting thousands of passengers travelling through the busy ghat section.

Several other services, including the CSMT–Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express, Jodhpur–Hadapsar Express, Dadar–Satara Express and Dadar–Sainagar Shirdi Express, have been cancelled on selected dates. Special trains connecting CSMT with Gorakhpur and Pune with Gorakhpur, Ghazipur City and Hazrat Nizamuddin have also been suspended on various dates until July 17.

Central Railway has deployed specialised machinery to restore the damaged section, including a Boulder Special Train and a Ballast Rake for transporting essential material. Track alignment and levelling work is being carried out continuously using a Unimat machine and a high-speed Duomatic machine, while eight 360-degree Poclain excavators and 12 JCB machines are being used to dig, lift and remove heavy landslide debris.

More than 1,100 railway personnel, including senior officials, have been deployed to clear boulders and debris and restore normal train operations. Railway authorities said a six-kilometre stretch of the Up line has already been cleared, while work continues under challenging weather conditions. Passengers planning to travel on affected routes have been advised to check the latest status of their trains before beginning their journeys.
