Rare Red Sprites and Green Ghost Lights Captured Over Tibet in Stunning Viral Footage

Astrophotographer Dong Shuchang films rare red sprites and green ghost lights over Tibet.

A remarkable display of rare atmospheric phenomena has captured global attention after stunning footage of red sprites and elusive green "ghost" lights was recorded above the Tibetan Plateau. The images, taken in the early hours of May 26, 2026, by Chinese astrophotographer Dong Shuchang near Lake Puma Yumco in Shannan, have gone viral across social media platforms, drawing fascination from scientists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.

Dong captured the event from an altitude of more than 5,000 meters above sea level during a powerful thunderstorm. The footage shows multiple bright red flashes appearing high above storm clouds, creating a dramatic visual spectacle against the night sky. These formations, known as red sprites, belong to a category of upper-atmosphere electrical phenomena called Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), which occur above thunderstorms and are often difficult to observe from the ground.

According to Dong, the event was one of the most impressive sprite displays he has documented in four years of observation. He described the outbreak as extraordinary and noted that he also photographed the far rarer Ghost sprites, which appear as green glows above some of the most intense red sprite events. Scientists believe these green emissions are produced when oxygen molecules in the upper atmosphere become excited by powerful electrical discharges.

Red sprites differ significantly from ordinary lightning. Instead of striking downward toward the ground, they occur at extremely high altitudes above thunderstorm systems and can take a variety of forms, including columns, branching tendrils, jellyfish-like structures, and carrot-shaped patterns. Their brief duration and occurrence above cloud layers make them challenging to capture, contributing to their reputation as one of the atmosphere’s most mysterious natural phenomena.

The footage quickly attracted widespread attention online, with viewers expressing amazement at the unusual display. Many users compared the green glow to a miniature aurora, while others said they were discovering the existence of sprites for the first time. Several commenters shared personal experiences of witnessing similar events, describing them as unforgettable and breathtaking moments.

Scientists continue to study red sprites and related atmospheric phenomena to better understand the complex electrical processes occurring above thunderstorms. While once largely unknown outside scientific circles, advances in digital photography and high-resolution imaging have made it easier to document these rare events. The latest images from Tibet provide one of the clearest visual records yet of red sprites and ghost lights, offering both researchers and the public a rare glimpse into one of nature’s most spectacular atmospheric displays.
