Pune's Gen Z Breaks Taboos on Periods, Consent, and Boundaries
Pune's Gen Z challenges long-standing taboos and promotes empathy, consent, and acceptance over judgment.
Young adults in Pune are increasingly challenging long-standing taboos around menstruation, consent, relationships, and personal boundaries, reflecting a broader shift in social attitudes among Gen Z. Many students say conversations that were once avoided are now becoming more open and accepted within their generation.
Students from Pune told The Indian Express that exposure to education, social media, and evolving cultural values has encouraged greater empathy and understanding among young people. Discussions around periods, dating, and personal choices are no longer viewed with the same level of stigma that older generations often associated with them.
Roshni Khobragade, a 26-year-old management student at Savitribai Phule Pune University, said many young men today are less judgmental about women’s behavior and choices. She noted that the biggest differences often emerge because of the generation gap between older and younger people.

According to several students, topics such as consent and emotional boundaries are also receiving more attention among college students today. They believe the younger generation is learning to prioritize respect, communication, and mutual understanding in relationships rather than following rigid social expectations.
Many students added that social media platforms and online discussions have played a major role in normalizing these conversations. Access to global perspectives and awareness campaigns has helped young people become more comfortable discussing issues that were once considered private or inappropriate in public settings.
Despite the progress, students acknowledged that complete acceptance is still far away, especially within conservative families and communities. However, they believe the growing willingness among Gen Z to openly discuss sensitive topics signals a gradual but meaningful cultural shift towards inclusivity and acceptance.
