Nepal Praises India’s Flood Relief Efforts, Calls PM Modi “Exceptionally Generous”
Nepal praises India’s support during its devastating flood crisis.
Nepal has praised India’s assistance following the devastating floods and landslides that have killed more than 600 people and left thousands missing across the country. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “exceptionally generous” and noted that New Delhi has indicated it would provide substantial assistance for Nepal’s reconstruction efforts.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Wagle highlighted India’s response since the disaster began on Wednesday. India has dispatched 57.6 tonnes of relief material to flood-affected areas, while an 11-member team comprising medical personnel and tunnel rescue experts has arrived in Nepal following a request from Kathmandu.
The disaster was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche following a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border. A large volume of water, mud and debris moved downstream through central Nepal, devastating towns and villages. Homes, vehicles, roads and bridges were swept away or damaged, while several hydropower projects were also affected.

Wagle explained that Nepal’s response was being carried out in phases, with rescue operations remaining the immediate priority. He noted that the Nepal Army had airlifted 1,930 people, while efforts were continuing to deliver relief supplies by air to areas including Dhunche, Rasuwa and Syaphru Besi, which were cut off after roads were damaged. More than 11,000 security personnel, including over 5,000 Nepal Army personnel, have been mobilised for search and rescue operations.
The next phase will focus on early recovery measures, including temporary shelters and cash-for-work programmes, before the country moves towards large-scale reconstruction. More than 2,400 people remained missing, while nearly 2,500 had been evacuated as rescue teams continued operations amid intermittent rainfall in affected regions.
Wagle also recalled India’s assistance following Nepal’s 2015 earthquake and described the country’s support as noteworthy. He indicated that New Delhi had conveyed its willingness to provide generous reconstruction assistance, while also acknowledging that support had been forthcoming from Nepal’s other neighbouring countries.
