Nepal Flash Floods: Congress Expresses Solidarity, Reaffirms India’s Support

The Congress on Saturday expressed solidarity with the people of Nepal following devastating flash floods that have killed hundreds and left many others missing. The party conveyed its condolences to families affected by the disaster and affirmed that India stands ready to assist Nepal during the crisis. According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 626 bodies recovered from the floods had been collected as of 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the death toll expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.

In a statement, the Congress emphasised the longstanding relationship between India and Nepal, describing the ties between the two countries as rooted in shared faith, culture and the Himalayan ecosystem. The party also referred to the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship as an important milestone in institutionalising relations between the two neighbours. It expressed support for Nepal’s efforts to deal with the humanitarian and economic consequences of the disaster and maintained that India would remain a trusted partner.

The Congress also conveyed that the Indian people were prepared to provide tangible assistance in a manner determined by the people of Nepal. The statement came as India continued relief efforts following the catastrophic flooding. India has already sent emergency humanitarian supplies and specialised rescue teams to Nepal to support operations in areas affected by the disaster.

Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel earlier expressed gratitude for the assistance extended by the Indian government following the floods. He also acknowledged the concern expressed by President Droupadi Murmu and conveyed condolences over the loss of Indian lives in the disaster. The response from both countries comes amid continuing search and rescue efforts across several districts affected by the floods.

The flash flood struck Nepal on Wednesday after originating in the Tibetan region of China and moving through the transboundary Bhote Koshi River. The flooding caused widespread destruction, with bodies being recovered from riverbanks in downstream districts along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West have reported recovery operations.

Officials have warned that the death toll could increase as rescue teams continue searching for missing people and recovering bodies. The scale of the destruction has prompted a major humanitarian response, with Nepal continuing relief and recovery operations while receiving assistance from India. The Congress has reiterated that India will stand with its neighbouring country as it deals with the aftermath of the disaster.
