Neck Compression Warning: Dr Hitesh Garg Shares 5 Signs Affecting Your Spinal Cord

Spine surgeon shares critical neck warnings.

Problems with the neck, such as stiffness or pain, are often dismissed as normal signs of ageing. However, that assumption is not always accurate, according to orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Hitesh Garg, who has highlighted several everyday warning signs that may indicate a more serious underlying issue affecting the cervical spine and, by extension, the spinal cord itself. In an interaction with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Garg explained that certain neck-related issues can stem from problems within the cervical spine, the section of the spine located in the neck region.

When this area experiences degeneration or structural changes, it can exert pressure on the spinal cord, potentially affecting other parts of the body, including the hands, arms, and legs, depending on the location and severity of the compression. "This can happen when age-related wear and tear, arthritis or a bulging disk causes narrowing of the spinal canal and puts pressure on the spinal cord, a condition known as cervical myelopathy," Dr. Garg stated, identifying the medical term used to describe this specific form of spinal cord compression originating in the neck. Cervical myelopathy, as he described it, arises when structural changes within the cervical spine progressively narrow the space available for the spinal cord, gradually increasing pressure on this critical neural structure over time.

According to Dr. Garg, recognizing the early warning signs of cervical myelopathy is important, given that the condition can have serious health consequences if left untreated, particularly since spinal cord compression can lead to progressive neurological symptoms that may become more difficult to reverse the longer they go unaddressed. Unlike routine muscular neck stiffness, which often responds to rest, stretching, or over-the-counter pain relief, symptoms stemming from spinal cord involvement may indicate a more serious underlying structural issue requiring specific medical evaluation and, in some cases, surgical intervention.

Dr. Garg's guidance underscores the importance of distinguishing between everyday, benign neck discomfort and symptoms that may signal a more significant problem within the cervical spine. Given that many people instinctively attribute neck pain or stiffness to the natural aging process, his comments serve as a reminder that persistent or unusual symptoms, particularly those involving numbness, weakness, or coordination difficulties in the hands, arms, or legs, warrant closer medical attention rather than being dismissed outright.

Early detection of cervical myelopathy is generally considered important in clinical practice, as timely diagnosis can allow for interventions aimed at relieving pressure on the spinal cord before more significant or permanent neurological damage occurs. Individuals experiencing persistent neck-related symptoms, particularly those accompanied by changes in sensation, strength, or coordination in the limbs, are typically advised to consult a medical professional for further evaluation, given the potential for underlying spinal cord involvement in cases that extend beyond typical age-related stiffness or discomfort.
