Mumbai Startup Founder Gives Struggling Employee Paid Getaway Instead of Pay Cut
Mumbai founder sends struggling employee on paid retreat, not pay cut.
A Mumbai-based startup founder is receiving widespread praise after sharing how he responded with empathy when an employee requested a salary cut following a difficult month at work. Instead of accepting the request, Dhruv Mukherjee, founder of Blue Lobster Media, chose to support the employee's recovery by arranging a paid getaway and providing a better work environment. The story, shared on LinkedIn, has sparked conversations about compassionate leadership and employee well-being in the workplace.
According to Mukherjee, the employee, Aarya, who serves as the company's Content Operations Lead, had been struggling with declining performance for several weeks. Content approvals were delayed, tasks that previously took an hour began taking significantly longer, and the overall quality of work had dropped. Initially, Aarya assured her manager that she would improve, but the challenges continued, prompting discussions about whether the role had become too demanding.
The situation took an unexpected turn when Aarya, disappointed with her own performance, asked for another opportunity and even offered to accept a salary reduction as a consequence. During a deeper conversation, she revealed that personal challenges outside of work had been affecting her concentration and productivity despite her efforts to perform well. Mukherjee said the discussion made it clear that the issue was not a lack of commitment but circumstances that required understanding and support.

Believing that investing in employees yields better long-term results than imposing penalties, Mukherjee decided against reducing her salary. Instead, the company paid for a three-day Airbnb stay, allowing Aarya two uninterrupted days to work in a fresh environment and one day to rest. In addition, the company arranged a desk at a co-working space near her home to help her work without distractions and maintain a healthier routine.
Mukherjee noted that Aarya had grown considerably during her two-and-a-half years at Blue Lobster Media, progressing from a content writer to editorial responsibilities before eventually leading content operations. Although the decision increased company expenses, he said the investment paid off, with Aarya regaining her enthusiasm for work and showing noticeable improvements in both motivation and performance after receiving the additional support.
The LinkedIn post quickly gained attention, with many users describing it as a strong example of empathetic leadership. Several commenters said employees are more likely to remain loyal when employers support them during difficult periods, while others highlighted that empathy and accountability can work together rather than being seen as opposing management styles. The discussion has also renewed broader conversations about mental well-being, psychological safety and the importance of creating supportive workplace cultures where employees feel comfortable seeking help when needed.
