Despite these recommendations, studies suggest that average salt intake in countries like India often ranges between 10–11 grams per day, more than double the limit advised by the World Health Organization.
Medical experts explain that excessive salt intake causes the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and placing added pressure on blood vessels. Over time, this contributes to high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Reducing salt intake can help relax blood vessels, improve circulation, and ease strain on the cardiovascular system.

Health professionals also note that excessive sodium can contribute to calcium loss through urine, which may weaken bone density and increase the risk of osteoporosis over time.

Many individuals also report better energy levels and improved comfort when dietary sodium is reduced. Experts emphasise that small, consistent reductions in salt consumption can produce measurable health benefits over time, especially when combined with a balanced diet and active lifestyle.
