Is Your Favourite Outfit Losing Its Shape? 9 Laundry Mistakes Could Be To Blame
Common washing habits can shorten the life of clothes.
Washing clothes may seem like a routine household chore, but incorrect laundry habits can gradually affect the colour, shape, texture and durability of garments. From using unsuitable water temperatures to adding too much detergent, small mistakes can cause fabrics to fade, shrink, stretch or wear out sooner. Proper care during washing, drying and storage can help clothes retain their appearance and remain usable for longer.
Nishant Tripathi, founder and CEO of DhobiLite, an organised laundry and garment-care brand, noted that improper maintenance can reduce the lifespan of garments and lead to unnecessary replacement costs. He explained that colour fading, shrinkage, loss of shape, unpleasant odours and weakened fibres can often be linked to incorrect laundry practices. Following garment-care instructions is therefore important not only for cleanliness but also for preserving fabric quality.
The first step is to understand the fabric before putting it in the washing machine. Cotton, linen, silk, wool, denim and synthetic blends can respond differently to water, detergent and heat. Care labels provide important instructions on washing, drying and ironing. Water temperature should also be chosen carefully, with cooler settings generally being gentler on delicate garments, while suitable warm-water settings can work for many everyday fabrics. The manufacturer's instructions should always take priority.

Another common mistake is using more detergent than necessary or washing garments too frequently. Excess detergent can leave residue on fabrics, while repeated washing exposes fibres to mechanical action, water and cleaning chemicals. Laundry should also be sorted according to fabric weight and care requirements rather than relying only on colour. Heavy items such as towels and denim can create friction against lighter garments, potentially contributing to pilling, stretching and premature wear.
Drying and storage are equally important. Clothes should not be left inside the washing machine for prolonged periods after a cycle, and garments must be completely dry before being folded and stored. Well-ventilated drying areas are particularly useful during humid or monsoon conditions. Wardrobes should also remain clean, dry and adequately ventilated. Structured clothing can be placed on suitable hangers, while knitwear is generally better folded to help retain its shape.
Premium and delicate garments, including silk sarees, embroidered clothing, woollens and formal wear, may require specialised care according to their manufacturer's instructions. Garment care also extends to the washing machine itself, as detergent residue, lint and moisture can collect inside the drum, tray and rubber seals. Regular machine cleaning and maintenance can support better washing performance. By paying attention to fabric type, temperature, detergent quantity, washing frequency, drying, storage and machine hygiene, consumers can help extend the useful life of their clothes.
