Foreign Tourists Vanish As Geopolitical Tensions Disrupt Uttarakhand’s Trekking Season

Foreign bookings drop, fuel shortages disrupt Uttarakhand’s adventure tourism season.

Uttarakhand’s adventure tourism sector is witnessing a slowdown this season as rising geopolitical tensions, particularly linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran, dampen foreign tourist inflows. Industry stakeholders report a sharp decline in international bookings, casting uncertainty over what is typically a peak period for trekking and mountaineering in the Himalayan state.

Tour operators across Uttarakhand say that inquiries from key international markets—including the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, and several European countries—have significantly reduced. According to Jayendra Rana, President of the Garhwal Mountaineering Trekking Association, the usual surge in bookings by March has failed to materialise this year, with many previously confirmed trips either postponed indefinitely or cancelled altogether.

The downturn is not limited to international arrivals. Domestic expedition organisers are also facing operational challenges due to disruptions in supply chains. Shortages of essential resources such as fuel, cooking gas, and kerosene—critical for sustaining high-altitude trekking expeditions—have added to the difficulties, increasing costs and logistical uncertainties for operators.

Despite the local administration announcing the formal opening of the mountaineering season from April 1, optimism within the sector remains muted. Uttarakhand has historically attracted over 10,000 foreign trekkers and climbers annually, making adventure tourism a vital contributor to the state’s economy, particularly for remote mountain communities that depend heavily on seasonal visitor income.

Experts suggest that global tensions are exacerbating pre-existing structural challenges within the state’s tourism framework. Veteran mountaineer Shashi Bahuguna noted that increasing bureaucratic hurdles have made Uttarakhand less appealing to international climbers, even though the Himalayas remain a coveted destination for adventure enthusiasts worldwide.

Echoing similar concerns, Karan Kaushik, founder of Alpinist Expedition Pvt Ltd, pointed to travel advisories issued by the United States government as a key factor behind the drop in American visitors. With uncertainty persisting on both geopolitical and administrative fronts, stakeholders warn that the sector may face a challenging season unless conditions stabilise in the coming months.
