Foreign Couple Sets Record Straight: 8 Outdated Myths About India Busted

Foreign couple debunks 8 stereotypes about India in viral post.

A foreign couple has gone viral on social media after debunking eight “outdated stereotypes” about India, offering a fresh perspective for global travellers. Iasmin and Tom, who have been exploring cities including Delhi, Aurangabad, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Goa, shared their experiences online to counter misconceptions about safety, cleanliness, food, language, and cultural practices in the country.

One of the most persistent stereotypes, the idea that India is universally dirty and chaotic, was challenged by the couple. They noted that many areas, including parts of New Delhi, are well organised and clean, reflecting India’s rapid development. They urged travellers not to judge the country solely based on selective media portrayals.

Concerns over safety, particularly for solo female travellers, were also addressed. Iasmin explained that while India can be intense at times, it is largely welcoming, with most people eager to engage in friendly conversations. She highlighted that these interactions often become the most memorable aspects of visiting the country.

The couple also tackled misconceptions about poverty, street food, and travel. They clarified that poverty exists in many countries and does not define India, and that street food is generally clean, delicious, and safe to try. In addition, they recommended higher-class railway tickets for a comfortable travel experience, sometimes even rivalling hotel stays.

Cultural stereotypes were addressed as well. Iasmin and Tom noted that India’s diversity means traditions vary widely across states, and “love marriages” are now common. They also highlighted the country’s linguistic diversity: India has 22 official languages and over 1,600 dialects, meaning someone from the north and someone from the south may not even understand each other.

Finally, the couple debunked myths around cuisine, emphasising that not all Indian food is spicy and that Western food is widely available. Their video has sparked conversations online, encouraging travellers to experience India firsthand and form their own perspectives rather than relying on outdated assumptions.
