Climate Change Makes Himalayan Peaks Riskier For Climbers, Experts Warn
Climate change is making Himalayan peaks increasingly dangerous for climbers.
The recent avalanche that claimed the lives of renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja and members of his expedition has once again highlighted the growing dangers faced by climbers in the Himalayas and the Karakoram. Purja and his team were attempting to summit Broad Peak when an avalanche struck at an altitude of around 6,600 metres on July 30. According to reports, the force of the avalanche swept the climbers nearly 1,000 feet down the mountain, with GPS data later helping rescuers trace their location. Three bodies were subsequently recovered during the search operation launched by local authorities.
Purja was regarded as one of the world's most accomplished high-altitude climbers, having successfully summited the world's 14 peaks above 8,000 metres multiple times. His extensive experience had earned him global recognition, making the tragedy a stark reminder that even the most skilled mountaineers remain vulnerable to the unpredictable conditions of the world's highest mountain ranges. The accident has renewed concerns about the increasing risks associated with high-altitude expeditions.
Experts say climate change is significantly altering weather patterns across the Himalayas and the Karakoram, making mountaineering more hazardous than ever before. Rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt, destabilising snowpacks and increasing the frequency of avalanches, rockfalls and ice collapses. Scientists have observed that the Western Himalayas, in particular, are experiencing more erratic weather, with sudden storms, fluctuating temperatures and changing snowfall patterns becoming increasingly common.

The changing environment has also reduced the predictability of traditional climbing seasons. Mountaineering experts warn that these changes leave climbers with shorter weather windows and less time to safely complete ascents, while rescue operations are also becoming more challenging in increasingly unstable terrain.
High-altitude expeditions continue to rely on detailed weather forecasting, experienced guides and strict safety protocols, but experts caution that these measures alone may not be enough to counter the growing impact of climate change. They emphasise the need for improved monitoring of mountain conditions, enhanced early warning systems and greater awareness among climbers about the evolving risks associated with expeditions in the region. Researchers also stress that long-term climate mitigation efforts are essential to address the underlying causes of these environmental changes.
The Broad Peak tragedy has once again drawn global attention to the fragile nature of the Himalayan and Karakoram ecosystems. As climate change continues to reshape some of the world's highest mountain ranges, mountaineers, expedition organisers and authorities are being urged to adapt to increasingly unpredictable conditions. The incident serves as a sobering reminder that even the most experienced climbers face mounting risks in an environment undergoing rapid and unprecedented transformation.
