ASTC Buses Introduce Real-Time Tracking And SOS Systems For Passenger Safety

Assam is set to give its public transport system a major technology upgrade, with Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses being equipped with an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) to improve passenger safety, operational efficiency and travel convenience. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that the state’s buses were being made “not just smarter, but incredibly safer” through the adoption of the new system.

Under the ITMS, ASTC buses will be fitted with real-time GPS tracking systems that will allow their movement to be monitored more closely. The technology is expected to provide transport authorities with better visibility over fleet operations while also helping passengers access more reliable information about bus movement. Real-time monitoring could also help officials identify delays and respond more efficiently to operational issues.

The system will also introduce smarter scheduling mechanisms aimed at improving fleet management and potentially reducing passenger waiting times. By monitoring buses in real time, transport authorities can gain better oversight of routes and movement patterns. The initiative is expected to make ASTC operations more responsive while improving the overall efficiency of the public transport network.

Passenger safety is another key focus of the technology upgrade, with emergency panic or SOS buttons being installed inside buses. According to information shared by the Chief Minister, these emergency systems will be connected directly to control centres to facilitate a quicker response during emergencies. The measure is expected to strengthen the safety environment for passengers, with particular emphasis on the security of women travelling on public buses.

The upgraded buses will also support automated ticketing and electronic payments, reducing reliance on conventional ticketing methods and expanding digital payment options in everyday public transport. The integration of digital ticketing with other ITMS features is aimed at making the passenger experience more convenient while improving accountability in bus operations.

The introduction of ITMS marks another step in Assam’s efforts to modernise its public services through technology. ASTC buses play an important role in connecting urban centres with smaller towns and rural areas across the state. With GPS tracking, emergency response mechanisms, digital payments and smarter scheduling being brought together, the government expects the system to make public transport safer, more efficient and more technology-driven.
