Andaman Travel: Why Neil Island is the Ideal Stop Between Port Blair and Havelock

Quiet beaches, sunset views and easy ferry connections await visitors.

Neil Island, officially known as Shaheed Dweep, can offer a quieter alternative to the busier parts of an Andaman holiday, particularly for travellers moving between Port Blair and Havelock. A two-night stay on the island can provide a slower break from a packed itinerary, with peaceful beaches, sunsets and long stretches of time without scheduled activities. For travellers who have already explored Port Blair and Havelock, adding Neil Island can change the pace of the trip and make the journey feel less focused on constantly moving from one attraction to another.

Reaching the island can also be relatively straightforward when ferry arrangements are planned in advance. The traveller described arranging the ferry from Port Blair through the hotel and then organising the onward journey to Havelock through the Neil Island resort. Staying with the same resort group across the three islands made the transfers easier to manage. Once on Neil Island, renting a bike was described as the simplest way to explore, allowing visitors to move between beaches and other spots at their own pace without having to build the day around a packed schedule.

The island’s beaches are among its biggest attractions, but their appeal lies as much in their atmosphere as in activities. Bharatpur Beach is known for water-based experiences such as snorkelling and glass-bottom boat rides, while Laxmanpur Beach is associated with sunsets and the natural rock formation popularly known as Howrah Bridge. Sitapur Beach is a popular place to watch the sunrise. Travellers planning to spend several hours by the water may want to carry essentials such as a towel, beach mat, sunscreen and water, while a small changing tent can also be useful where facilities are limited.

Neil Island also offers a simpler food and leisure experience compared with Havelock. Visitors can find local eateries and home-style cooking, while some resorts have their own restaurants for those looking for more options. One of the most memorable experiences described from the trip was an evening spent sitting on the beach with tender coconut water and watching the sunset. Back at the accommodation, the slow pace continued with music, games, conversations and time by the sea, creating an experience that required little planning after the day’s sightseeing was over.

For travellers who prefer a quieter holiday, this slower rhythm can be the main reason to stay longer rather than treating Neil Island as a quick stopover. The island works particularly well as a break between the more structured sightseeing of Port Blair and the activities, diving and café options associated with Havelock. Two days and two nights can provide enough time to explore the main beaches, rent a bike, enjoy the local food and spend an evening without having to rush between attractions.

The key advice for visitors is to give Neil Island at least two nights if the itinerary allows it and arrange ferry tickets ahead of time, especially when hotel and onward travel bookings have fixed timings. Shaheed Dweep is best suited to travellers who want quiet beaches, sunrise and sunset views, water activities and an unhurried atmosphere rather than a long list of attractions. As a middle stop between Port Blair and Havelock, the island can provide exactly what a busy holiday sometimes needs: a couple of days with nowhere urgent to be.
