H5N1 Confirmed in Over 1500 Dead Crows in Chennai, Alert Escalates

Chennai tightens bird flu surveillance after H5N1 confirmed in dead crows.

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu have been placed on high alert after over 1,500 dead crows tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The Centre has directed the state government to intensify surveillance and containment measures to prevent further spread. Bird deaths reported from areas such as Adyar, Velachery, Thiruvanmiyur and OMR triggered laboratory testing. Samples sent to a high-security facility in Bhopal confirmed the presence of the virus.

Health and animal husbandry officials say the situation is being closely monitored, even as no human cases have been reported so far. Authorities have emphasised that the risk to the general public remains low at present. However, precautionary steps are being taken to ensure the virus does not spread to domestic poultry or humans. Officials have urged the public to remain alert without giving in to panic.

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is caused by influenza A viruses that mainly affect birds. The H5N1 strain is considered highly pathogenic as it spreads quickly among birds and causes high mortality. Human infections are rare and usually occur through direct contact with infected birds or their secretions. There is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.

In response to the outbreak, the Tamil Nadu government has stepped up bird surveillance and enforced strict biosecurity measures. Poultry farms and markets have been instructed to follow hygiene protocols, while safe disposal of dead birds has been made mandatory. The public has been advised not to touch dead or sick birds and to report such cases immediately. Health departments are also monitoring hospitals for flu-like illnesses.

Experts say basic precautions can significantly reduce any potential risk to humans. Avoiding contact with birds, maintaining hand hygiene and consuming only properly cooked poultry products are key safety measures. People experiencing flu-like symptoms after possible exposure have been advised to seek medical attention promptly. Authorities say continued vigilance and coordination between animal and health agencies will be crucial in containing the outbreak.
