Bank Holiday Calendar: May 1 Closure For Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima Across India

Banks nationwide close May 1 for multiple observances; seven states remain operational, and digital services continue.

Banks across India will remain closed on May 1, 2026, in several states and union territories due to a combination of public observances, including Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima, Labour Day, and the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu. The closures will affect physical banking operations such as branch visits, cheque clearances, and in-person customer services in notified regions. Other institutions, including schools, colleges, government offices, and post offices, may also remain shut depending on local government notifications.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar, bank branches will continue operations on May 1 in Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. In the rest of the country, customers are likely to face branch closures for the day. The holiday schedule varies from state to state as regional events and local commemorations are taken into account while finalising annual banking holidays.

Despite branch closures, digital banking services are expected to function normally throughout the holiday period. Customers will still be able to access ATMs, mobile banking apps, internet banking platforms, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services without interruption. Banking experts generally advise customers to complete urgent branch-related work such as demand drafts, cash deposits, or document submissions in advance of public holidays.

May begins a month that will include a total of 12 bank holidays across India, counting weekly offs and state-specific closures. These holidays apply to both public and private sector banks, though schedules may differ depending on regional observances. The RBI holiday list is intended to help consumers and businesses plan transactions, salary processing, and financial commitments ahead of time.

Among other key dates in May, May 9 will be a holiday in West Bengal for Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, while the second Saturday will be observed in the rest of India. Sikkim will observe State Day on May 16, and Tripura will mark the birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam on May 26. Additional closures linked to Eid-ul-Adha and Bakri Eid are scheduled for May 27 and May 28 in several states.

Banks will reopen on May 2, as closures under RBI norms are generally applicable only on the second and fourth Saturdays each month, along with Sundays and notified public holidays. Customers are encouraged to verify local branch schedules before visiting, as some state-specific changes may apply closer to the date. The staggered holiday calendar reflects India’s regional diversity and varied public observances.
