Rapper Honey Singh Says Drug Addiction Caused Harm, Took Eight Years to Recover

Honey Singh took eight years to overcome drug addiction; he shares his struggle and warns youth about its dangers.

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has opened up about the devastating impact of drug addiction on his life, revealing that it took nearly eight years for the substances to fully leave his system even after he quit consumption in 2014. In a candid interview with NDTV on Friday, the 42-year-old artist described drug use as the “biggest mistake” of his career and issued a strong warning to young fans, saying the damage happens slowly and often without realization.

“The Honey Singh of 15-20 years ago was intelligent and ambitious, but he made one huge mistake – he did drugs,” he said. Diagnosed with substance-related health issues in 2014, Singh stopped immediately, yet the physical and mental toll lingered. “Sukhe nashe maine 2014 mein chhod diye the, but even then it took me eight years to recover. It just wouldn’t leave my system. I never want anyone—not even an enemy—to go through what I went through,” he added, stressing that the long-term harm far outweighed any temporary high.

At the peak of his fame between 2012 and 2014, when he was touring the world and earning massive sums, Singh deliberately distanced himself from his parents. “I met them only four or five times because my mind was occupied with fame and money. I also kept distance because I thought they would find out about my addiction,” he confessed. The period marked a sharp decline that saw him disappear from public life for several years.

After a prolonged hiatus, Singh staged a comeback in 2023 with tracks like Kalaastar and has since been vocal about mental health and substance abuse. His latest revelation underscores the lasting physical consequences of drug use and serves as a cautionary tale at a time when several high-profile Indian celebrities have spoken out on similar struggles.
