Pakistan PM Highlights 100,000 Terrorism Deaths, Vows Defeat With Clerics' Support
PM Shehbaz Sharif asserts determination to eradicate terrorism with public support and notes militants backed by enemies and Pakistan's May 2025 strength.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, declaring that the menace of militancy would be “thrown into the Indian Ocean.” The remarks were made during a high-level meeting with senior clerics from the National Paigham-i-Aman Committee, a body formed last year to counter extremism, hate speech, terrorism, and sectarianism.
“We are determined to defeat terrorism, and with the support of the people, we will throw it into the Indian Ocean,” Shehbaz said, underscoring that militants receive backing from what he called the “enemies of Pakistan.” He added that terrorism has exacted a heavy toll on the nation, claiming the lives of over 100,000 Pakistanis over the years, and urged the international community to recognise the sacrifices made by Pakistan in the fight against militancy.
Highlighting Pakistan’s resilience, Shehbaz recalled the country’s show of strength during a four-day conflict with India in May 2025, asserting that the nation had demonstrated its capability to defend itself. He also pointed to Pakistan’s vast natural resources, worth trillions of dollars, emphasising that their effective exploration and utilisation could help tackle persistent challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment. “If we use the hidden treasures, all our problems will end,” he remarked.

The National Paigham-i-Aman Committee, comprising influential clerics, has condemned groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, stating clearly that terrorism is unjustifiable under any circumstances. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed hope that the committee would play a pivotal role in shaping a national narrative against extremism and terrorism, promoting unity and stability across Pakistan.
Shehbaz’s statements come amid ongoing efforts by the Pakistani government to reinforce counter-terrorism measures, strengthen internal security, and ensure community support in combating radicalisation. By linking the fight against militancy with economic development and national unity, he sought to convey a message of resolve both to domestic audiences and the international community.
The meeting reinforced Pakistan’s stance that defeating terrorism requires collective action, societal engagement, and the sustained commitment of religious leaders, civil society, and government institutions.
