Nature's Young Explorer: Aarya Sharma Chases Youngest National Parks Record

Sixteen-month-old Aarya Sharma pursues record visiting all sixty-three US national parks.

At just 16 months old, Aarya Sharma is on track to become the youngest person to visit all 63 national parks in the United States. Accompanied by her parents, Akshay Sharma and Aparajita Rai, the Indian-origin toddler has already visited 34 national parks, crossing the halfway mark in her record attempt. The family hopes to complete the journey within the next two years and is working with Guinness World Records to officially document and verify the achievement.

The idea of pursuing the record emerged unexpectedly during one of the family's earlier trips. After they had visited around 15 national parks, a park ranger suggested that Aarya could potentially become the youngest person to complete visits to all 63 parks. Inspired by the suggestion, the family decided to take on the challenge. The current record is held by Journey, a child from Texas who completed the feat at the age of three in 2023. If successful, Aarya would set a new world record by completing the journey at an even younger age.

According to her parents, Aarya has shown a remarkable fascination with nature from an early age. They say she enjoys observing waterfalls, forests, wildlife, and changing landscapes during their travels. Her mother recalled a visit to Yosemite National Park, where Aarya sat quietly in front of a waterfall, captivated by the scenery and fully immersed in the experience. The family believes such experiences help nurture curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Beyond the record attempt, Aarya's parents hope their travels will teach her the importance of environmental conservation and protecting natural heritage for future generations. Although she is too young to fully understand those values now, they believe repeated exposure to nature will help develop a lasting connection with the outdoors. The family's adventures are regularly shared through their Instagram account, where they document visits to national parks and encourage others to explore America's protected landscapes.

Travelling across the country with a toddler presents its own challenges, and Aarya's parents acknowledge that every trip requires careful planning and flexibility. They said the experience depends on ensuring that Aarya enjoys each journey, as forcing travel on a young child would make the experience difficult for everyone. As full-time software professionals, the couple carefully plans their trips around weekends and holidays, often making travel arrangements at short notice to maximise family time.

The family's next destination is Alaska, where they plan to visit seven of the state's remote national parks, bringing Aarya significantly closer to completing her ambitious goal. With more than half of the country's national parks already explored, the young traveller's journey has attracted widespread attention as an inspiring example of family adventure, early exposure to nature, and a unique attempt at setting a new Guinness World Record.
