Kishwer Merchantt Shares Thyroid Diagnosis, Weight Loss Struggle Post-Pregnancy

Kishwer Merchantt opens up about thyroid struggles during pregnancy.

Actor Kishwer Merchantt has spoken about her struggle with weight loss after developing thyroid issues during pregnancy, shedding light on a condition that affects many women during and after childbirth. In an interview with Galatta India, the actor revealed that she was diagnosed with thyroid problems while pregnant and continues to face challenges in losing weight. Her comments have sparked renewed discussion about the impact of thyroid disorders on metabolism, energy levels and postpartum recovery.

Sharing her personal experience, Merchantt said that weight loss becomes significantly more difficult when living with thyroid-related conditions. She described her ongoing battle with the disorder, noting that many people may not fully understand the challenges associated with hypothyroidism. Her remarks reflect the experiences of many women who notice persistent weight gain, fatigue and changes in energy levels during pregnancy or after delivery and seek answers about their thyroid health.

According to endocrinologist Dr. Sandeep Kharb, Senior Consultant – Endocrinology at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, pregnancy can trigger thyroid dysfunction due to changes in the immune system. One of the most common conditions seen after childbirth is postpartum thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid gland that can develop within the first year after delivery. Women with a family history of thyroid disease, thyroid antibodies or existing autoimmune disorders are considered to be at a higher risk of developing thyroid-related complications during or after pregnancy.

Dr. Kharb explained that postpartum thyroiditis often occurs in two stages. Some women initially experience hyperthyroidism, in which the thyroid gland produces excessive hormones, before transitioning to hypothyroidism, where hormone production drops below normal levels. While many women recover without long-term complications, others may develop permanent hypothyroidism that requires lifelong medication and regular monitoring to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.

Addressing the link between hypothyroidism and weight gain, Dr. Kharb said that reduced thyroid hormone levels slow the body's metabolism, causing fewer calories to be burned. The condition can also lead to fatigue, reduced physical activity and water retention, all of which make weight management more challenging. However, he emphasised that thyroid disorders are only one factor influencing body weight and should not be considered the sole reason for difficulty in losing weight.

Medical experts note that successful weight management depends on a combination of factors, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, genetics and overall hormonal health. They advise women experiencing persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes or other symptoms after pregnancy to seek medical evaluation, as timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of thyroid disorders can significantly improve long-term health and quality of life.
