Fitness Coach Recommends 4 Simple Rules Instead Of Counting Calories For Weight Loss
Expert shares practical habits for sustainable weight management.
Fitness coach Vanja is encouraging people to move away from calorie counting and instead focus on building simple, sustainable habits for long-term weight management. In a recent Instagram post, the co-founder of Movesmethod and Moves Labs said weight loss does not necessarily require tracking every calorie consumed. Instead, she suggested following four practical rules that can naturally help create a calorie deficit while promoting a healthier relationship with food.
The first principle focuses on prioritising protein and plant-based foods at every meal. According to Vanja, each plate should include a quality source of protein along with fruits or vegetables, rather than aiming for specific macronutrient targets. Protein and fibre-rich foods can help increase feelings of fullness, reduce overeating and support overall nutrition, making it easier to maintain healthy eating habits over time.
Her second recommendation is to eat within a fixed time window, a practice commonly associated with time-restricted eating or intermittent fasting. Vanja emphasised that the benefit lies less in fasting itself and more in reducing opportunities to overeat. She also advised eliminating liquid calories by cutting back on sugary beverages, specialty coffee drinks and alcohol during weekdays. Replacing these drinks with water or unsweetened beverages can significantly reduce overall calorie intake without major dietary changes.

The fourth rule encourages taking a 10-minute walk after every meal. According to Vanja, short walks can support digestion, improve the body's response to food and contribute to increased daily physical activity without requiring strenuous exercise. Over time, these brief walks can accumulate into several hours of additional movement each week, making them a simple and sustainable addition to a healthy lifestyle.
Vanja's overall approach centres on consistency rather than strict calorie tracking or restrictive dieting. She advocates listening to natural hunger cues, consuming sufficient protein to support the body's needs and focusing on habits that can be maintained over the long term. While calorie counting may work for some individuals, her method highlights that sustainable lifestyle changes and balanced nutrition can also play an important role in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
