Heart Surgeon Dr Jeremy London Shares 5 Ways To Reduce Heart Attack Risk

Heart Surgeon Shares Tips For Heart Health

Heart health experts continue to emphasise that preventing a heart attack does not depend on a single quick solution but requires consistent lifestyle choices and regular health monitoring. Dr Jeremy London, a board-certified heart surgeon, has highlighted five important factors that can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stressing that heart protection involves a combination of physical health habits and emotional well-being. In an educational video shared on July 16, Dr London addressed the question of how people can reduce their chances of suffering a heart attack.

While the idea of preventing a heart attack in “60 seconds” was used to attract attention, the surgeon explained that long-term prevention depends on several daily decisions rather than a single action or shortcut. One of the most important steps, according to Dr London, is avoiding all forms of smoking and vaping. Tobacco use is widely recognised as a major risk factor for heart disease because it can damage blood vessels, increase blood pressure and contribute to the buildup of plaque in arteries.

Eliminating tobacco exposure remains one of the most effective ways to improve cardiovascular health. Dr London also advised people to regularly monitor their blood pressure, including checking it at home. High blood pressure often develops without noticeable symptoms but can place additional strain on the heart and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious health complications. Keeping blood pressure within a healthy range through lifestyle changes and medical guidance can significantly reduce risks. Another key area he highlighted was understanding and managing cholesterol levels.

Tracking important cholesterol markers can help identify the risk of plaque formation in arteries, which may eventually restrict blood flow to the heart. Regular health check-ups and discussions with medical professionals can help individuals understand their cholesterol levels and take appropriate steps if needed. Maintaining stable blood glucose levels was another important recommendation. Elevated blood sugar, particularly in people with diabetes or prediabetes, can contribute to damage in blood vessels and increase cardiovascular risk. Dr London stressed the importance of a balanced diet, regular physical activity and proper management of blood sugar levels as part of overall heart care.

Beyond physical factors, Dr London also pointed to the importance of social connections in protecting heart health.  He said maintaining relationships and avoiding social isolation can play a significant role in overall well-being. Research has increasingly linked loneliness and chronic stress with higher risks of cardiovascular problems. Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally. According to data from the Heart Foundation, heart attacks contribute significantly to mortality rates, highlighting the need for awareness and preventive care.

While medical advancements have improved treatment options, experts continue to stress that prevention remains the strongest defence. Dr London’s advice highlights that heart attack prevention requires a comprehensive approach involving healthy habits, regular monitoring and emotional balance. Avoiding tobacco, controlling blood pressure, managing cholesterol, maintaining healthy glucose levels and staying socially connected can collectively help reduce cardiovascular risks and support long-term heart health.
