Doctor explains differences between fruit and added sugars

Heart surgeon Dr Jeremy London has explained the difference between natural sugar found in fruits and added sugar commonly present in processed foods, addressing confusion over whether both types of sugar affect the body in the same way. His explanation comes amid growing discussions around sugar intake and its impact on overall health. Avoiding excessive sugar consumption is often considered an important part of maintaining a balanced diet.

However, many fruits contain naturally occurring sugars, creating confusion among people who are advised to reduce sugar intake while also being encouraged to include fruits in their daily meals. Dr London, a board-certified heart surgeon with more than 25 years of experience, addressed the topic in a video shared on Instagram on July 7. He explained that while fruits do contain sugar, the way the body processes fruit sugar differs because it comes along with other beneficial nutrients.

According to Dr London, whole fruits contain natural sugars along with fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other compounds that influence how quickly sugar is absorbed by the body. The presence of fibre, in particular, helps slow digestion and prevents rapid spikes in blood sugar levels compared with many foods containing added sugars. Added sugar, on the other hand, is typically introduced into foods and beverages during processing or preparation.

These sugars are often found in products such as sweets, soft drinks, packaged snacks and desserts, where they may contribute additional calories without providing significant nutritional benefits. Dr London highlighted that the concern is not simply the presence of sugar itself but the overall nutritional context in which it is consumed. While excessive intake of any type of sugar can be harmful, naturally occurring sugars in whole fruits are generally considered part of a healthy diet when consumed in appropriate portions.

Nutrition experts have also emphasised that fruits should not be avoided because of their natural sugar content. Whole fruits provide essential nutrients and are associated with several health benefits, including improved digestion, better heart health and support for overall dietary balance. The distinction between natural and added sugars is an important factor when making food choices.

Rather than eliminating all sources of sugar, health professionals generally recommend focusing on limiting highly processed foods with added sugars while maintaining a diet rich in whole foods.
