Dermatologist Explains How Air Conditioning Causes Skin Dryness Year-Round

Dermatologist explains how air conditioning weakens skin's natural moisture barrier.

Spending long hours in air-conditioned offices, cars or rooms may contribute to skin dryness by reducing moisture in the surrounding air. Dermatologist Dr Shefali Saini told Hindustan Times that people who notice sudden tightness, sensitivity or roughness should consider their daily exposure to air conditioning alongside their skincare and lifestyle habits. While dry skin is often associated with winter, prolonged exposure to low-humidity indoor environments can affect the skin barrier throughout the year, including during hot and humid weather.

The skin has a natural protective barrier made up of skin cells, lipids and natural moisturising factors that helps retain moisture and protect against irritants. According to Dr Saini, air conditioning reduces indoor humidity, allowing water to evaporate more easily from the skin through a process known as transepidermal water loss. Over time, this can weaken the skin's ability to retain moisture. Early signs may include tightness after cleansing, a dull appearance and rough texture, while prolonged exposure can lead to flaking and increased sensitivity.

It is also important to distinguish between dry and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is generally a skin type associated with lower oil production, whereas dehydrated skin is a temporary condition caused by insufficient water in the skin. This means even people with oily or acne-prone skin can experience dehydration. Those particularly vulnerable include people with naturally dry or sensitive skin, individuals with eczema or a compromised skin barrier, people using acne treatments such as retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, office workers who spend long hours in air conditioning and frequent travellers exposed to dry cabin air.

Several subtle changes can indicate that the skin barrier needs additional support. Tightness after washing, a tired-looking complexion, roughness despite regular skincare, frequently dry lips and makeup settling into fine lines can all be warning signs. Increased sensitivity to products that were previously tolerated may also indicate that the barrier has become compromised. Recognising these symptoms early can help prevent dryness from becoming more severe.

For managing AC-related dryness, Dr Saini recommends keeping skincare simple and consistent. A gentle cleanser can help prevent the skin from being stripped of its natural oils, while applying moisturiser soon after cleansing, preferably when the skin is slightly damp, can help reduce moisture loss. Lip care should also be included because the lips have a thinner protective barrier. Sunscreen remains important even for people who spend much of their day indoors, particularly when sitting near windows or travelling regularly, as UVA rays can pass through glass.

Air conditioning may be difficult to avoid in modern workplaces, homes and vehicles, but skincare habits can be adjusted accordingly. Supporting the skin barrier through gentle cleansing, regular moisturisation and daily sun protection can help minimise dryness and sensitivity. Rather than relying on an elaborate skincare routine, maintaining a consistent barrier-focused approach can help the skin cope better with prolonged exposure to air-conditioned environments.
