Experts List 7 Sunscreen Mistakes That Reduce Skin Protection
Common sunscreen application errors that may be damaging your skin.
Sunscreen is an essential part of a daily skincare routine, but applying an SPF product does not automatically guarantee complete protection. Using too little, failing to reapply and overlooking exposed areas can reduce its effectiveness, potentially contributing to tanning, uneven pigmentation, dryness and premature signs of ageing.
Applying an insufficient quantity is one of the most common mistakes. A frequently used guideline for the face and neck is the two-finger rule, which involves squeezing sunscreen along the index and middle fingers. Other exposed parts of the body should also be covered with a sufficient, even layer because SPF ratings are based on specific application amounts during testing.
Sunscreen should not be reserved only for bright or sunny days. Ultraviolet radiation can still reach the skin when clouds obscure the sun, while UVA exposure can contribute to pigmentation and premature ageing. Daily application may also be necessary for people spending extended periods indoors near windows.

Another mistake is applying sunscreen once in the morning without reapplying it. The protective layer can wear away through sweating, swimming, touching or wiping the skin and towel drying. People spending extended periods outdoors should generally reapply about every two hours and more frequently after swimming or heavy sweating.
Consumers should not choose a product solely by looking at its SPF rating, which primarily indicates protection against UVB radiation. Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays, while an SPF of 30 or higher is commonly recommended for everyday use. The formula should also suit the individual’s skin type.
Frequently missed areas include the ears, neck, hairline, lips, scalp parting and backs of the hands. Sunscreen should be applied evenly before sun exposure and allowed to settle before makeup is used. Careful application, suitable coverage and timely reapplication are essential for receiving the intended protection.
