Dermatologist Explains Common Skin Changes After Pregnancy And Their Management

Dermatologist explains post-pregnancy skin changes and care.

Pregnancy brings several physical changes to the body, and the skin is among the areas that undergo noticeable transformation. After childbirth, many women experience concerns such as loose skin, stretch marks, pigmentation and acne. Dermatologists say these postpartum skin changes are common and usually occur due to hormonal fluctuations, weight changes, stress, lack of sleep and the nutritional demands of recovery.

Dr Rickson Pereira, dermatologist at Dermatherapie Clinic, Khar, explained that the skin may take time to return to its earlier state after pregnancy. He noted that while many postpartum skin changes gradually improve with time and proper care, some concerns may require medical guidance if they persist or affect a person’s confidence.

One of the most common postpartum skin concerns is melasma, also known as the “mask of pregnancy”. It appears as dark patches on areas such as the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Stretch marks are another frequent change caused by the rapid stretching of skin during pregnancy. These marks generally become lighter over time, although they may not completely disappear without specialised treatments.

New mothers may also experience postpartum acne due to hormonal changes, stress and disrupted sleep patterns. Dryness and increased skin sensitivity can occur as the body adjusts after childbirth, while reduced collagen and elastin levels may lead to mild skin laxity, particularly around the abdomen.

Dermatologists recommend keeping postpartum skincare routines simple and consistent. Gentle cleansing, regular moisturising and daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen can help maintain skin health and prevent issues such as pigmentation from becoming more noticeable. New mothers are also advised to stay hydrated, follow a balanced diet and get adequate rest whenever possible.

Experts suggest caution while using active skincare ingredients, especially during breastfeeding. Products containing retinoids or strong chemical exfoliants should only be used after consulting a dermatologist. Medical advice should also be sought if pigmentation, acne, stretch marks or loose skin continue for several months or become difficult to manage.

Dermatologist-guided treatments may help improve persistent concerns such as stretch marks, acne scars, uneven skin texture and mild skin laxity after pregnancy. Early consultation can help identify safe and effective options based on individual skin needs.
