Dermatologist Shares The Ideal Face Mask Routine Based On Your Skin Type

Expert explains face mask routine based on skin needs.

Face masks have become a popular addition to skincare routines, with celebrities and social media influencers promoting various products for concerns such as dryness, dullness, acne and excess oil. Dermatologists, however, say that face masks should not be used as a one-size-fits-all solution and the frequency should depend on an individual’s skin type and needs.

According to dermatologist Dr Manjot Marwah, consultant at LHR Clinics in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, face masks can provide additional benefits when used correctly alongside basic skincare practices. Factors such as pollution, heat, humidity, dust and sweat can affect skin health daily, making proper cleansing, moisturising and sun protection important parts of a routine.

Dr Marwah explained that face masks may help remove excess oil, unclog pores, improve skin texture, restore hydration and give the skin a healthier appearance. However, she advised against using face masks every day, as excessive use may not be necessary and could potentially irritate the skin, especially when unsuitable products are chosen.

For oily skin, Dr Marwah recommended using a charcoal-based face mask around twice a week to help manage oil and keep pores clean. People with dry skin can opt for masks containing ingredients such as aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, honey or glycerine and use them two to three times a week to support hydration and reduce dullness.

Those with sensitive skin should choose gentle, fragrance-free soothing masks and limit usage to about once a week. For acne-prone skin, Dr Marwah suggested specialised masks such as ALA-based formulations once a week to help control excess oil and maintain clearer pores. People with normal skin can use hydrating or brightening masks around twice a week.

Dr Marwah also advised users to select products according to their skin type rather than purchasing random masks promoted online. She recommended applying sunscreen every morning, especially when using exfoliating or brightening masks, and following mask application with a moisturiser. If symptoms such as itching, redness or irritation appear, users should stop using the product and prioritise skin health.
