Shah Rukh Khan Refused to Bow to Underworld Threats, Says Sanjay Gupta

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has recalled how Shah Rukh Khan allegedly refused to bow to pressure from people linked to Mumbai’s underworld despite facing threats to his safety. Speaking on the Hussain Zaidi Files podcast, Gupta said the actor remained firm when he was allegedly pressured to work on a film or television project backed by underworld-linked individuals. According to Gupta, Shah Rukh Khan made it clear that threats would not determine the professional choices he made.

Gupta said Shah Rukh Khan was willing to face the consequences rather than agree to work under pressure. Recalling the actor’s response, he said Shah Rukh Khan described himself as a “Pathaan” and told those threatening him to “just shoot me if you want”. Gupta claimed that Shah Rukh Khan’s refusal eventually earned him the respect of people from the underworld, who, according to the filmmaker, recognised that at least one prominent figure in the Hindi film industry was prepared to resist such pressure.

The filmmaker’s account refers to a period when Bollywood was dealing with concerns over alleged interference by criminal networks in the film industry. Producers, actors and other industry figures had reportedly faced pressure relating to film projects, financing and other business matters. Such incidents contributed to heightened security concerns for several prominent personalities, with some members of the industry reportedly taking additional precautions because of threats.

Shah Rukh Khan had also spoken about such threats in an earlier interview with comedian and actor Ruby Wax. During that conversation, the actor discussed how people in the film industry could allegedly be pressured into accepting projects. When Wax asked whether someone could threaten a person by demanding participation in a film, Shah Rukh Khan indicated that such threats had occurred and suggested that they were not always made as politely as the hypothetical example presented by her.

Shah Rukh Khan also said during the interview that he had personally received death threats on several occasions. He recalled having a significant security presence for three years during that period. His comments, along with Gupta’s recent recollection, offer an account of the kind of pressure and security concerns that some Bollywood personalities faced during an era when alleged underworld involvement in the industry attracted considerable attention.

On the professional front, Shah Rukh Khan is set to appear next in King, directed by Siddharth Anand. The film is being produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures and features Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan alongside Shah Rukh Khan. The project marks another major release for the actor, whose career has continued to span several decades across a wide range of Hindi-language films.
