Mini Mathur Reveals Pregnancy Changed Her Indian Idol 5 Hosting Opportunity

Mini Mathur Recalls Losing Hosting Role After Pregnancy.

Television host Mini Mathur has spoken about two occasions when pregnancy affected her career, saying she lost professional opportunities because of perceptions about pregnant women in the entertainment industry. In a recent interview with Hauterfly, Mathur recalled that her MTV contract was not renewed after she became pregnant with her first child, Vivaan, and that she was later asked not to host the fifth season of Indian Idol for the same reason. Mathur said she had already spent five years working as an MTV VJ when she became pregnant with Vivaan. According to her account, the channel chose not to renew her contract because pregnancy was considered inconsistent with the image associated with television VJs at the time.

She described the experience as an example of how expectations around a woman's appearance and personal life could influence professional decisions in the entertainment industry. “I had spent five years on MTV. My contract was not renewed because VJs are never pregnant,” Mathur said during the interview. Her comments highlight the professional challenges she says she faced at a time when pregnancy was often treated as something that could interfere with a woman's suitability for on-screen roles. Mathur said a similar situation occurred years later when she was considered for Indian Idol 5. She recalled being told that she should not host the season after announcing her pregnancy because the makers believed viewers would not accept a pregnant woman presenting the popular singing reality show.

According to Mathur, the concern was not about her ability to perform the job but about how audiences might respond to seeing a pregnant host on television. The television host contrasted her experience with examples from international entertainment. She recalled Heidi Klum continuing to host Project Runway while pregnant, pointing to the difference in how pregnancy could be perceived in entertainment industries in different countries. Mathur's comparison reflected her broader argument that pregnancy should not automatically be viewed as incompatible with professional responsibilities, particularly for women working in television and other public-facing careers. Mathur has had a long career in Indian television and entertainment, working as a presenter and host on several programmes.

Her experience of losing opportunities during pregnancy also reflects a broader conversation about how women in the workplace can face career-related assumptions when they become mothers. Pregnancy can involve practical considerations for employers and employees, but Mathur's account focuses on the perception that a pregnant woman may not fit the expected image of an on-screen presenter. Mathur is married to filmmaker Kabir Khan, and the couple have two children, Vivaan and Sairah. Looking back at her career, she has spoken openly about balancing professional responsibilities with motherhood and the challenges that accompanied that process.

Her latest comments have brought renewed attention to the expectations placed on women in the entertainment industry and the extent to which pregnancy can influence casting, hosting and employment decisions. Her account also raises questions about the representation of pregnancy in mainstream television. While women continue to occupy prominent roles as presenters, actors and media personalities, expectations surrounding appearance and public image can sometimes shape professional opportunities. Mathur's recollections underline how such attitudes affected her own career and why she believes pregnancy should not be treated as a reason to exclude women from prominent professional roles.
