‘Lambodhara 2.0’ Introduces Real Humanoid Robot As A First For Kannada Sci-Fi Cinema
Kannada Film Features Real Humanoid Robot
Kannada filmmaker Simple Suni is bringing an unusual technological element to Sandalwood with Lambodhara 2.0, a high-concept science-fiction thriller set against the backdrop of Bengaluru. The film features a real physical humanoid robot in a prominent role, rather than relying entirely on computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create its robotic character. The makers say the approach marks a significant experiment for Indian cinema, combining filmmaking with robotics and artificial intelligence-inspired storytelling. At the centre of the film is JIA, a humanoid robot developed by Bengaluru-based technology company Machani Robotics.
Unlike digitally created characters that are added during post-production, JIA is physically present on the sets and participates in scenes alongside the human cast. This allows the filmmakers to capture interactions with the robot in real time, giving the production a different visual and performance dynamic compared with conventional science-fiction films that depend heavily on visual effects. Directed by Simple Suni, Lambodhara 2.0 is positioned as more than a technology-driven spectacle.
The story is set in Bengaluru and explores the complicated relationship between people and their increasingly digital lives. The film delves into the less predictable aspects of online existence, using science fiction to examine themes connected to technology, human behaviour and the ways digital platforms influence everyday life. The decision to use an actual humanoid was central to the film’s production approach. With JIA physically available on set, the actors could respond to a real machine rather than an imagined character or an object that would later be replaced through CGI.

The technique also allows the camera to capture the robot’s physical movements, proportions and presence directly during filming, potentially reducing the need for extensive digital recreation during post-production. JIA’s involvement also highlights the growing intersection between Bengaluru’s technology ecosystem and the Kannada film industry. Machani Robotics, which developed the humanoid, has brought its engineering expertise into a mainstream cinematic production through the project. The collaboration gives Lambodhara 2.0 a distinctive connection to the city in which both its story and its robotic character are rooted.
With Lambodhara 2.0, Simple Suni is attempting to explore how emerging technology can be incorporated directly into filmmaking rather than being used only as a post-production tool. The presence of a functioning humanoid robot as part of the film’s cast makes the project an unusual experiment in Indian cinema. As the film explores the messier side of online life through a Bengaluru-based science-fiction narrative, JIA’s real-world presence is expected to remain one of its most distinctive features.
